The Plan …

I’m just a little behind on getting this post up, but fortunately thats not a reflection on the pace of the production. The production seems to be moving along well. I’m happy with our pace so far. And I’m exceptionally pleased with the crew that’s assembled around this project. I say it’s assembled, rather than saying something like “I’ve put together” or “I’ve found” because I didn’t really find these people. They came to the project by volunteering. They found me, I only had to have the good sense to take advantage of the gift of their help.

So before I explain the plan, let me just say that that there is a specific time frame for this film to be completed. According to the terms of the grant we were awarded, we have one year to deliver a finished project. So that doesn’t leave a lot of time to cover a topic that, honestly a more patient filmmaker than myself could spend years covering. Yes, there really is that much material. St. Louis Brick is a deceptively big subject. So since we only have been given a year, we needed to plan the film accordingly. Obviously this wasn’t going to be a comprehensive film on the topic, but we do hope to create a compelling overview of the history and future of brick in the city that viewers will be motivated to explore it further.

So with that in mind, the plan I’ve laid out for the film is this: To gather the many experts, preservation activists, archivists, and trades people and sit down and interview them to discover the story of brick in St. Louis. Once we have gathered these stories we will head into the field to video examples of things to illustrate these stories. The plan is simple, and allows us enough freedom to follow where the story might take us without losing focus on the core story story; brick– how St. Louis became a brick city and how it can remain one in the future.
