Elaborating on the title

One of the things we’ve both spent a lot of time thinking and talking about is the film’s title. I wasn’t instantly sold when Bill first mentioned the quote and presented a rough draft of the title. Almost immediately he changed my mind by elaborating that it was chance that St. Louis had such an abundance of clay, chance that brought so many skilled immigrants to St. Louis where they were allowed to do such amazing brick work, and now we have a chance to save what we still have; many fortunes were built in brick, St. Louis brick is our underappreciated fortune and the brick thieves use bricks as their fortune– by stealing from us.

See how perfect that title is?

Although I’ve been working with Bill since November and I’ve read and read and read and read and talked to dozens of people over the phone and we’ve filmed seven interviews, the project has taken on a new level of importance now that it has a title. And I love it.

When you read the title, Brick by Chance and Fortune: A Saint Louis Story, what do you envision?
