A documentary about the past, present, and future of brick in St. Louis, Brick by Chance and Fortune chronicles the city’s rich history as both a producer and user of a building material that’s as lovely as it is sturdy. Once a major player in the U.S. brick-making industry, St. Louis still boasts countless brick houses, from small working-class bungalows to the stately mansions of the Central West End and University City, and the documentary artfully illustrates the diversity and beauty of the city’s striking brick edifices.

Bill Streeter’s award-winning video blog, Lo-Fi Saint Louis, boasts St. Louis’ best musicians, artists and burlesque queens. But for his first feature-length film, Streeter showcases a subject that, on the surface, seems pretty dull: brick.

“I admit it seems a little nutty,” Streeter says. “But the more I learned about the history here and how that history is being stolen by brick thieves, I realized this could be a good film. One of the things that helped me think it was OK is when I saw that movie ‘Helvetica.’ I figured if someone can make a movie about a typeface, I can make a movie about a building material.”

“Brick by Chance and Fortune” had its debut at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and will play twice this week at Off Broadway. The title, taken from Greek historian Plutarch, alludes to our geological jackpot: the clay beds that lie beneath large areas of St. Louis.

Like anything we see every day, brick is largely taken for granted, which is why BRICK BY CHANCE AND FORTUNE: A ST. LOUIS STORY is such a revelation. Even viewers who’ve never given St. Louis brick a second thought should be impressed how Streeter unexpectedly manages to turn a seemingly narrow subject into the type of relevant discourse that a great documentary should be.
